Very Fine Flint Enamel Figure of a Lion on Base, Stamped "Lyman Fenton & Co. / Fenton's / ENAMEL, / PATENTED / 1849. / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1849-1852, molded figure of a standing lion on base with heavy coleslaw mane, upswept tail, open mouth with protruding tongue, and front paw resting on a ball. Lion and ball decorated with a mottled olive and amber glaze. Base with spotted and mottled reddish-brown glaze. Underside impressed with circular Lyman Fenton & Co. maker's mark. An impressive and iconic Bennington form. Provenance: Robert Meltzer Collection; Skinner, Inc., November 3, 2007. A crack to one hind foot and other hind leg. A loss to tip of one tooth. Otherwise excellent condition. L 11" ; H 9".
