Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Wreath Decoration, Stamped "G. BENTON & L. STEWART / HARTFORD", CT origin, circa 1815, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted wreath in the Manhattan style surrounding the maker's mark. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. An in-the-firing spout chip and in-the-firing spout nick. Clay residue to top of spout. A small in-the-firing chip to top of handle. A tight 5 1/2" crack, extending onto underside.
