Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Tulip Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid pail with tubular pouring spout and applied clay ears with wire-and-wood bail handle, decorated on the front with two spitting tulips flanking a wreath-decorated spout. Reverse with two spitting tulips emanating from a central stem with graduated leaves. Cobalt highlights to ears, handle terminals, maker's mark, and capacity mark. Includes tin covers for pail and spout. Exceptional large size. Heavy chipping along edge of handle at base on reverse. A shallow 7/8" chip to top of rim. A tiny, glazed-over rim chip. A minor, glazed-over flake to interior of spout. Some light fry to area of cobalt. Tin pail cover missing handle. H 10 5/8".
