Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, possibly Brown Pottery, Arden, NC, 20th century, semi-ovoid jug with applied clay face including bulging eye and an open mouth with porcelain teeth, the surface covered in a mottled brown alkaline glaze. Provenance: A recently-discovered example, this jug is part of a consigned collection of face jugs dating from the 1860s to the 1950s, that were amassed during the 1970s. As-made condition with some in-the-firing dryness and bubbling to glaze on reverse and handle. H 7".
