Scarce One-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG. PA", circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handes, decorated with a brushed design of a man's profile flanked by a crescent-shaped arch of leaves. Brushed cobalt "1" to left of face. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Relatively few one-gallon jars bearing this iconic Harrisburg design are known. Very nice condition. A chip to exterior of rim. Small chips, nicks, and wear to edge of inner rim for lid. A minor iron ping to right of decoration. Lid in excellent, essentially as-made condition. H (excluding lid) 9 1/2".
