Exceptional Miniature Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tulip Decoration, Dated 1867, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'" and "JOHN BELL", 1867, diminutive, cylindrical crock with footed base, tooled shoulder, and squared rim, the surface dipped in a whitish slip and decorated with three spotted tulips emanating from groups of graduated swags. Underside with highly unusual cobalt date, "1867", composed of a series of brushed spots. Impressed with two different maker's marks, "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'" at the shoulder and "JOHN BELL" on the underside. Excellent size, decoration, and color. One of the finest examples of John Bell stoneware we have ever offered. Excellent condition with a small rim chip, a minor X-shaped surface line on interior (not visible on exterior), an in-the-firing surface line to underside (not visible on interior), and an area of in-the-firing dryness to surface. H 3 1/4".
