Exceptional Small-Sized Stoneware Presentation Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Inscribed "J. WATHEIS / 1862", Northeastern U.S. origin, 1862, approximately one-quart, squat-shaped jug with tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a ring-necked bird perched on a flower. Impressed below with the cobalt-highlighted name, "J. WATHEIS". Decorated below with the cobalt date, 1862, underscored by foliate brushwork. Cobalt stripes to handle. Exceptional size, form, decoration, and inscription. The squat style of the jug suggests it may have been made for use on a buggy or ship. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a thirty-five years Midwestern collection. Excellent overall condition with a few short lines to base, a minor spout nick, and two small chips to underside at edge. H 6".
