Scarce Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J.P. BODIE / MAKER", Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, South Carolina origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tapered shoulder and tall, semi-squared rim, the surface covered in a mottled green alkaline glaze. Shoulder impressed with Jesse P. Bodie maker's mark. Appealing size and form, unusual for this maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently-discovered in Virginia. Excellent condition with a small rim chip. H 10 3/4".
