Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.", Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1835, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a large brushed design of an undulating stem bearing graduated leaves and a large flower blossom. Additionally decorated on the reverse and under each handle with stylized foliate motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A good example of Wilkes Street Pottery stoneware, exhibiting the classic, rotund form of Smith stoneware. This jar survives in rarely-found, near-flawless condition with a small chip to one handle.
