Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jug with tapered spout, decorated with a large brushed design of a bird with unusual crest and heavily-shaded wing, perched on a stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Excellent size to decoration, measuring 8 1/2" tall. A chip to spout. Three base chips, one of which is glazed-over. The largest of these chips measures 1 1/4" x 3/4", is mostly visible on the underside, and includes a 1 3/8" line extending from it. An additional in-the-firing chip to underside. H 14 1/2".
