Possibly Unique Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration of a Hatted Rider with Whip atop a Horse, Stamped "M. TYLER. MANUFACTURER / WASHINGTON .ST .ALBANY.", New York State origin, circa 1835, cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder and short spout, the front decorated with a brushed design of a hatted man with raised arm holding a whip, riding atop a horse. Incised details to rider and the horse's bridle and martingale. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes wooden stopper. This design is exceedingly rare in American stoneware production in general and virtually unknown in the potting tradition of Albany, which typically utilized incised fish and bird motifs on its best work. One of the most important examples of Moses Tyler stoneware to come to auction in recent years. Reverse with vertical crack extending from shoulder to underside, where it forms a Y. Two minor chips to interior of spout and a minuscule nick to exterior of spout. H 12 3/4".
