Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Advertising Crock with Cobalt Standing Deer Decoration, Stamped "P. WHITIN & SONS, / WHITINSVILLE, MASS.", attributed to J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT, circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and heavily-shaded body, standing atop a stylized ground embellished with three shrubs. Cobalt highlight to "P. WHITIN & SONS" merchant mark at shoulder. Long restored vertical crack to left side of crock's front. An approximately 5" restored crack extending diagonally from rim on front of crock. Both of these restored cracks appear to include some restoration to the rim. A 2 1/2" hairline from rim on right side of crock. A small glazed-over iron ping at shoulder on reverse.
