Rare Four-Gallon Sardis, OH Stoneware Advertising Jar, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "GEO. CASE. DEALER IN / GENERAL / MERCHANDISE. / ONE PRICE ONLY / SARDIS. OHIO.". Freehand cobalt stripes and flourishes above and below stenciling. Base inscribed "4" in cobalt. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago in New Market, MD. Some tight cracks on underside, one of which continues 3 1/2" up side of jar and two of which continue a very short distance onto base on front. A chip to right handle. Some staining. An in-the-firing 1" chip near base on reverse. A chip on interior of rim.
