Possibly Unique One-Gallon Stoneware Jug, Incised "Kiss my Ass", New York State, circa 1830, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, hand-incised with script inscription "Kiss my Ass". Few examples of 19th century stoneware feature profanities, and this jug is the first piece we have seen bearing this particular quip. While one can only speculate about the potter's rationale behind making a jug bearing these words, it is most probable that they reflect his mindset toward another individual on the day it was made. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor thirty years ago. Excellent overall condition with a tiny inverted U-shaped line in spout and some minor in-the-firing flaws. H 11 1/2".
