Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Game Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, NY", circa 1885, ovoid churn with flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a game bird with turned head and heavily-spotted body, perched atop a leafy plant. Slip-trailed number 5 above. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable form, decoration, and maker. A 1" crack from rim. Some light fry to edges of cobalt. An approximately 2 1/4" long, semi-circular crack to collar only, visible on front and top of rim, but not interior. Some wear to inner rim where a lid would rest. H 18".
