Rare Two-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, late 18th century, ovoid jar with combed banding to shoulder, ribbed vertical handles, and flared rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a flowering vine bearing two unusual flower blossoms. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jar includes traits found on a growing group of incised stoneware pieces made in Manhattan, NY during the late 18th century. These defining characteristics include a light-colored clay, use of a combed tool, artistic incising featuring segments where cobalt slip is deliberately omitted, and a stem produced from a three-pronged stylus. A restored meandering crack extending around much of body. A minor 1" surface line from rim above one handle.
