Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Bold Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, circa 1775, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and ribbed vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with two thickly-applied cobalt watchspring designs, embellished with floral accents at the center. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable early form featuring particularly vivid motifs. Two chips to top of rim, measuring 1 3/8" and 1". Large spider cracks to body, particularly evident on one side. A few flakes to surface, the largest running along a crack and measuring 1 1/8". A crack through each handle, one of which includes a chip. Chipping around base. H 12 3/4".
