Rare Lidded Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANHATTAN, WELLS / NEW-YORK", circa 1805, approximately one-and-a-half or two-gallon cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design with splayed leaves. Front impressed with the large-sized maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr., embellished with cobalt stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Jar includes original recessed lid with Albany slip glaze. This example is unusually large for its form. Cylindrical Crolius jars are typically found in a smaller size lacking handles, and are occasionally found bearing impressed fruit names or the word "PICKLES". This example, which surprisingly includes its original cover, was likely made to hold larger-sized produce, or larger quantities of produce, for preserving. Two chips to underside of lid. A reglued 6" x 1/2" section to underside / base. Base chips. An approximately 6 1/2" restoration to rim on reverse. A 2 1/4" restoration to rim on front. Two other small rim chips and a small glazed-over chip to interior of rim. Heavy chipping to base. H 13 1/4".
