Scarce and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG. PA", circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a brushed design of a man's face surrounded by a crescent-shaped foliate design. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals, maker's mark, and capacity mark. Excellent color and classic Cowden & Wilcox decoration. Provenance; David Musser Collection. A small rim chip and small base chip. Some minor fry to cobalt. A very faint 2 1/2" vertical surface line to front below decoration, not visible on interior.
