Unusual Glazed Redware Lion's Head Plaque, probably Gast Pottery, Lancaster, PA, circa 1875, molded plaque in the form of a lion's head with open mouth, bared teeth, and lolling tongue, the surface decorated with reddish-brown manganese and white slip under a clear lead glaze. Hole for hanging in reverse. Chips to one ear and a small glaze flake below ear. Minor chips to opposite ear. Some wear to edge of a plaque, where it would meet the wall. Other small glaze flakes. One upper tooth lost during the firing, smoothed, and glazed over. H 5 1/4".
