Outstanding Four-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Floral Decoration and Pittsburgh Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jug with applied handles at the shoulder and tooling to spout and shoulder, decorated with a large stenciled rose motif above the advertising "W.D. COOPER & BRO. / NO. 7. / DIAMOND / PITTS.". Base with stenciled number 4 flanked by foliate accents. Base with freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent form and decoration. Lamp wire hole drilled in underside. Spout is plugged for lamp attachment. Chipping to spout, primarily on right side. A 1/2" in-the-firing chip and contact mark to right handle. A hairline to left handle. Some glazed-over, in-the-firing contact marks to surface. A minor nick to shoulder molding on reverse. H 17 1/2".
