Scarce and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "S.D. KELLOGG / WHATELY", MA origin, circa 1851-1853, cylindrical jar with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of two daisies emanating from a central stem. Heavy scrolled cobalt highlights to interior of petals. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Unusual mark, bold decoration, and excellent color. A glazed-over 1 3/8" chip to rim with a short in-the-firing line extending through it. Nicks to inner rim, where a lid would rest.
