Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Pedestal-Base Cooler with Incised Double-Bird and Cobalt Flowering Urn Decorations, Stamped "SOMERSET, / POTTERS WORKS," MA origin, circa 1850, elegantly-potted cooler with applied lug handles, flared pedestal base, and squared bung hole with canted corners and impressed screw head embellishments. Cooler's front decorated with an elaborate incised and cobalt-highlighted design of two birds perched on leafy branches. Excellent impressed and incised detail to birds' bodies. Reverse with a brushed cobalt design of a flowering urn. Cobalt stripes to handles and encircling base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and screw head details on bung hole. Excellent condition with a faint 2 1/4" line from rim on side of cooler, a small chip and minor nick to interior of rim, and some small surface flakes to right side of cooler. H 16 3/4".
