Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1860, semi-ovoid jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, wattle, and long tail, perched on the branch of a forked tree stump. Stylized ground with shrubs below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A desirable Norton motif. A 2 3/4" vertical spider line at base, which continues across majority of underside. A series of other short, vertical lines at base. Spout chips. Two short lines in top of spout. A small in-the-firing chip to handle. Two drips of salt mixed with cobalt to shoulder on reverse. A minor stone ping to shoulder on reverse. H 15 3/4".
