Exceptional Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1860, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, crest, wattle, and long tail, perched on the branch of a forked tree stump. Shaded accents to left side of stump. Stylized ground below includes shrubs and dotted accents. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Outstanding size and impressive decoration, measuring 14 1/2" tall. Exfoliation to shoulder area on reverse. Some small flakes to area of left handle and below left handle.
