Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Flying Hawk Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large flying hawk above a stylized ground including a fence and shrubs. A desirable Norton motif. Excellent color and impressive size to decoration, spanning the length of the crock's front. Faint diagonal 4" hairline from rim on reverse. A faint 6" vertical line extending from shoulder to base area on reverse, part of which is visible on interior. Faint surface lines to left of decoration.
