Four-Gallon Glazed Redware Churn, Galena, IL origin, second half 19th century, tapered cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, the surface covered in lead glaze over a mottled green ground with appealing crawling to the glaze. Impressed "4" at shoulder. Provenance: From a long-term private collection of Galena, IL redware consigned to this auction. A 3" chip to rim on front. Inner rim with wear and a small chip. Reverse with area to rim and two areas to shoulder lacking glaze, possibly in-the-firing. Some light surface wear to front. Glaze wear to left handle. Lesser glaze wear and a small chip to right handle. A large horizontal, Y-shaped crack to base with small chip at apex. This crack continues onto underside. An in-the-firing surface flake and adjacent adhered piece of clay to underside, caused when churn fused to another piece during the firing. H 15 1/4".
