Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY", James Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large stenciled design of a Federal eagle with shield, holding a banner in its beak, inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY". Area surrounding eagle heavily-decorated with freehand stripes. Additional large cobalt stripe below rim and cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent color with appealing combination of stenciled and freehand decoration. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with two in-the-firing chips to underside at bottom edge of jar.
