Impressive Eight-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped 'J. BURGER. / ROCHESTER. N.Y.", circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of conjoined leaves with veined and spotted interiors. This example features a particularly thick application of the slip with an appealing raised texture to the design. Slip-trailed "8" above. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Outstanding size. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a faint horizontal surface line to shoulder, probably in-the-firing, and not visible on interior. H 23".
