Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Bird Eating Grapes Decoration, Stamped Twice "BOSTON", Jonathan Fenton, Boston, MA, late 18th century, well-potted, ovoid jar with footed base, open loop handles, and heavy tooling to the rim and shoulder, the front decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with turned head, carrying a cluster of grapes in its beak. Decoration includes fine detail to the bird's feathers. Shoulder impressed twice with the cobalt-highlighted mark, "BOSTON". Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Fenton's bird-eating-grapes motif is considered quite difficult-to-find. This jar is the first bearing this impressed motif we have ever offered. Heavy chipping to base, much of which occurred in the firing, including a 1 1/4" glazed-over base chip. A 3/4" chip on interior of rim. A small chip on exterior of rim. A tightly-sealed crack extending from feet of bird to base of jar and 3" onto underside. H 12 3/4".
