Rare Three-Gallon Hackensack, N.J. Stoneware Advertising Crock with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, tall rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a chicken pecking kernels of corn atop a stylized ground. Impressed at the shoulder with the cobalt-highlighted advertising "BANTA BROTHERS. / HACKENSACK, N.J.". Large spots of staining, primarily on reverse. Staining to underside. A 1" base flake. A 2 1/4" area of shallow chipping to interior of rim. A few other chips on exterior of rim. A very faint 3" Y-shaped surface line to shoulder, which does not appear to go through to the interior. A few old paint drips to surface. Water glass staining to interior.
