Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J.A. & C.W. UNDERWOOD / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.", circa 1865-1867, cylindrical jug with rounded spout and applied handle, decorated with a finely-executed, slip-trailed design of a crested bird with long tail, perched on a tail, heavily-detailed stump. The stump includes graduated swag details throughout and is surrounded at the base by stylized shrubs and ground cover. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. One of the finest examples of Underwood stoneware we have ever offered. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some very minor surface wear to right of stump at base and a small in-the-firing chip / contact mark near base on front.
