Twelve-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Rose Decoration, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA", circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated with an elaborate stenciled rose motif at the shoulder and base, the midsection featuring the stenciled signature of James Hamilton. Additional stenciled flourishes to midsection. Freehand stripes at shoulder and base. Large stenciled "12" at base. A 3 3/4" area of light exfoliation on right side of jar's front near base. A few small chips on interior of rim. Some wear to shoulder molding. H 20 1/2".
