Exceptional Twenty-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "R.T. WILLIAMS. / NEW GENEVA, PA.", circa 1885, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with elaborate freehand vining and stripes throughout. Midsection with R.T. Williams maker's stenciling, flanked by stenciled tulips and freehand dashes. Base with large cobalt script "20" flanked by graduated vertical stripes. With its monumental size and heavy brushwork, this jar is possibly the finest example of R.T. Williams stoneware we have sold. 6" hairline to shoulder area on reverse. A glazed-over, in-the-firing separation line on interior, visible as a 1 3/4" glazed-over line on reverse. Approximately 9" long Y-shaped crack at base on right side of jar's front, connecting to a large Y-shaped crack on underside. H 24 1/2".
