Outstanding and Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, ovoid pitcher with tooled rim and applied strap handle, the body decorated with boldy-brushed dotted tulips in the classic John Bell style, flanking a cross-shaped blossom. Collar decorated with cobalt swags. Handle with large cobalt swag designs emanating from its base and stylized foliate decoration along its back. Excellent color with vivid cobalt over a whitish slip ground. Impressed on shoulder with John Bell maker's mark above a one-gallon capacity mark. The finest John Bell stoneware pitcher we have offered in years. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 10 3/4".
