Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "M. WOODRUFF / CORTLAND", New York State origin, circa 1867-1869, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed floral motif featuring three large tulips emanating from a tornado-shaped design with scrolled flourish. Slip-trailed "5" at shoulder. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Excellent size, form, and decoration. Very nice condition. Some fry to heavier areas of cobalt. A small rim chip. Some tiny flecks of white paint to reverse. A small chip, typical light wear, and tiny nicks to inner rim where a lid would rest.
