Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Abstract Cobalt Figural Decorations, Dated APRIL 5 1874", Stamped "HART's / FULTON", New York State origin, 1874, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a highly-stylized design resembling hatted human figures, including heavy spotted embellishments throughout. Front includes the impressed date "APRIL 5 1874". Reverse includes a slip-trailed "2" surrounded by dots and a dotted flourish below, inscribed with a script "H", presumably for "Hart". A highly unusual example of Hart family stoneware. Very nice condition. Numerous typical small chips to inner rim where a lid would rest. Otherwise excellent, as-made condition with a 2 1/2" in-the-firing separation line on interior of rim, not visible on exterior, and a salt drip at base on front.
