Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a tree stump. Shading to both edges of stump and stylized ground cover below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Outstanding color with bold, raised slip decoration. Very nice condition. A 2 1/2" vertical, in-the-firing line at base on reverse, which is glazed over and continues a short distance onto underside. Two minor chips to one handle and two tiny nick to opposite handle. A tiny nick and short surface line to interior of rim.
