Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Profuse Cobalt Clover Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1850, cylindrical cooler with squared rim, ribbed lug handles, and octagonal bunghole, decorated with a heavily-brushed, two-stemmed clover plant extending from the bunghole. Reverse with similar elaborate clover decoration. Collar decorated on front and reverse with heavy cobalt swags. Large cobalt circles around handle terminals and garland of vertical stripes under each handle. Cobalt circle decoration around bunghole. Incised with an incised looping line on collar, possibly a "6". Exceptional size and wonderful, early-style clover decoration. A 2" x 1" base chip on front. A small base chip with faint hairline extending a few inches up base, not visible on interior. Tight 11 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. An approximately 5" crack at base on reverse, extending approximately 5" onto underside. H 17 1/4".
