Extremely Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Tree-of-Life Decoration, attributed to Henry Lowndes, Petersburg, VA, circa 1845, squat-shaped, ovoid pitcher with short collar and ribbed strap handle, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a flowering plant, the so-called Lowndes tree-of-life motif, extending up the front. Collar decorated with opposing floral designs which meet at the spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A particularly difficult-to-find Lowndes form, this pitcher is potted in an exceptional small size, features wonderful decoration and color, and survives in remarkable condition, a rarity among surviving James River products. Possibly the finest Lowndes stoneware pitcher to come to auction in many years. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor many years ago. Extremely rare, near-mint condition with minor spout and rim wear. H 8 1/4".
