Very Rare Stoneware Sugar Bowl with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Henry H. or Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1866, finely-potted ovoid form with footed base and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with two brushed tulip blossoms extending from leafy stems. Cobalt swags decoration around circumference of rim and base. Handles heavily decorated with cobalt dashes to top edge, cobalt highlights to bottom edge, and additional cobalt dashes below. An exceptional form from Philadelphia's premier potting family, this pot includes an inscrutable brushed cobalt name on underside, as well as a date, probably 1866. This sugar bowl is only the second Remmey example we have ever offered, the last being sold in 2006. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately twenty years ago. Excellent condition with minor chipping to inner rim and a very minor chip to top of rim. H 4 1/4" ; Diameter (across top) 3 3/4".
