Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped LEWIS / HUNTINGTON.," Long Island, New York origin, circa 1830-1854, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, featuring a stylized brushed foliate design as well as cobalt highlights to the maker's mark, capacity mark, and lower handle terminal. Excellent size and form, featuring the mark of pottery owner, Henry Lewis, after Matthew Gardiner had left the partnership. Relatively few examples bearing this mark have survived. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Excellent condition with a minor flake to top of spout and in-the-firing pings to surface, some of which have been unnecessarily filled with plaster. H 16 1/2".
