Extremely Rare Stoneware Figural Owl Pitcher with Cobalt and Manganese Highlights, attributed to Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna Pottery, Anna, IL, circa 1875-1890, molded in the form of a seated owl with branch-form handle including a morning glory thumbrest, decorated throughout with cobalt and manganese slip and covered in a heavy salt glaze. This example is the only American salt-glazed stoneware pitcher in the form of an owl we have seen. The Kirkpatricks' fascination with this animal form can be noted in their rare molded owl whistles, of which only a handful are known. Like the Anna frog pitchers, this form was copied from majolica ware, and includes similar manganese and cobalt highlights over a light clay ground. An exciting recent discovery. Significant restoration to spout. Restored rim chip on reverse. Restoration to edge of thumbrest on handle. H 9 7/8".
