Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and squared spout, decorated with a brushed design of a human face with long nose and solemn expression, surrounded by a crescent-shaped foliate design. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Literature: Illustrated on p. 89 of American Stoneware by William C. Ketchum; Illustrated on p. 137 of "Stoneware, Prized Ware of Old Time Potters", The Encyclopedia of Collectibles, Time-Life Books, Alexandria, VA, 1980. Excellent, essentially as-made condition, with only minor flaws, which appear to be in-the-firing. Some faint lines to underside, a few small iron pings, some staining, a minor base nick on reverse, and a contact mark to top of handle.
