Rare Eight-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Stenciled Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large and elaborate stenciled floral design bearing roses, daisies, tulips, acorn-shaped buds, and bellflowers, surrounding a stenciled James Hamilton maker's mark. Additional stenciled sunburst and bold-faced number "8" at center. Freehand stripes at shoulder and base. 11 1/2" restored crack from rim on left side of front, which joins a large curving crack from rim on reverse, together forming a Y. A restored horizontal crack at base on reverse/sides, not affecting front of jar. Restored crack in underside. A faint 3" Y-shaped line to shoulder on front, not visible on interior. Two faint surface lines on reverse, not visible on interior.
