Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Flared Rim and Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," circa 1850, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied tab handles, profusely decorated with a cobalt flowering plant motif on the front, a swag and hanging flower design on the reverse, and additional swags under each handle. Excellent decoration and form. This jar originally descended in a family living and working on Springfield Plantation, located on the Northern Neck of Virginia, between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, in Heathsville, VA. Springfield Plantation was built in 1828. Some very large chips off base. Heavy chipping to one handle. A few small rim chips and a 1" shallow rim flake. In-the-firing sagging to rim. H 13 1/2".
