Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J & E NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a shaded tree stump with shrubs at base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A desirable Norton design, exhibiting strong, crisp cobalt. Excellent condition with staining, minor base nicks, and light surface abrasions to midsection and spout.
