Outstanding and Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with tapered spout and applied handle, decorated with a large and elaborate slip-trailed design of crossed pheasants with turned heads and long tails, perched on the branches of a tree. Base of tree accented with shrubs. Few Norton double-pheasant jugs of this capacity are known. A desirable Norton design, exhibiting excellent color. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in the consignor's family, presumably since the time the jug was made. Excellent condition with a shallow, 7/8" base chip, which occurred in-the-firing and is partially glazed-over, as well as some shallow chipping on the interior of the spout.
