Rare One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Impressed Geometric Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, late 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied ribbed handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed diamond pattern with serrated edges, embellished with impressed rosettes. Cobalt highlights throughout decoration. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent form and decoration. Significant restoration to reverse and one side of jar, not affecting decoration. Two short, faint lines in rim on front, possibly in-the-firing. A very minor rim nick. This example has both vertical handles intact, a rare feature of jars from this early period.
