Extremely Rare Yellowware Pitcher with Profuse Floral Decoration, Signed "R Web. & Co. / Potters Salineville OH / J.C. McDaniel," late 19th century, molded pitcher with upswept spout and raised floral design on handle, both sides decorated with a rose plant design in green, brown, and black glazes. Base with geometric rosette designs in black. Signature on underside in black glaze. Provenance: This possibly-unique pitcher surfaced at an East Liverpool, Ohio, auction in 1995. An article was written about the pitcher by the late James L. Murphy in the July 3, 1995 issue of Antique Week, which will be included with this lot. According to Murphy, R. Webb probably refers to Robert Webb, who, along with his brother, Henry, is listed in the 1880 Federal Census as a potter living in East Liverpool, Ohio. Murphy also states that the only reference to an R. Webb in Salineville, Ohio is in an 1889 directory, which lists "Eureka Pottery, R. Webb & Co., Rockingham and yellowware and fancy marble china, Main St." and that "no other known marked pieces or pieces attributable to this pottery are known". A particularly fine example of American yellowware, featuring rarely-found, exuberant freehand decoration. Excellent condition with a shallow 1 1/2" chip to underside of foot. H 10 5/8".
