Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "Shirleysburg, PA / May 31, 1871," attributed to Philip Kabis, Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, PA, ovoid jar with flattened rim, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on each side with a brushed cobalt flower below the inscription "Shirleysburg, PA" and date "May 31, 1871". Additional stripe decoration to each handle and brushed "2" underneath each handle. Decoration is applied over slip-coated clay. A rare inscribed example of Huntingdon County, PA stoneware. 4" hairline from rim. Three rim chips. A chip on interior of rim. A minor glazed-over handle chip. A minor base chip.
